Migration of a Zabbix monitoring system from a proprietary database to a PostgreSQL DBMS
Customer
Bank "Renaissance Credit"
Year
2020
Features of the project
The advantage of the migration scheme proposed by FORS was the shortest downtime of Zabbix, a system that monitors the performance efficiency of all the computing infrastructure nodes. The Bank has more than 3,000 hosts, so continuous monitoring of their load and performance level is critical for the Bank's work. The system aggregates the key metrics to build graphs, so that the administrators can monitor and analyze the performance of information systems and resources.
Main stages of the project
- Preparing for migration
- Testing
- Migration
- Industrial operation
During the testing stage, data was transferred from about 130 tables that store the monitoring system configuration parameters. To avoid errors, the data metamodel was carefully studied and the loading priority for each table was determined. This was followed by a series of load tests, DBMS functioning optimization, and final performance tests that showed how well the new database handles the load.
Some parameters had to be adjusted to get optimal results. The actual migration was successful, since all errors had been fixed at the testing stage. And in just six months, the amount of data stored in the new system has more than doubled its initial volume.
FORS Reference
«Initially, Zabbix worked on a proprietary DBMS, but then the customer decided to abandon it in favor of PostgreSQL for a number of reasons. First of all, Zabbix is compatible with PostgreSQL by default, requiring no additional coding. Secondly, this transition will reduce the required number of licensed servers and save a lot of resources further on. Thirdly, the project will show how to move forward when transferring the rest of the Customer's banking systems to the new platform, for the performance indicators on both platforms are practically the same.».

Head of Implementation and Support at FORS Development Center (FORS Group)
Customer reference
«We got everything we had expected to obtain with this project. The technical and economic benefits of the migration are obvious. The server capacity streamlining, license price for the basic software, and converting capital costs to operating costs saved us a lot of resources. It is important to mention that all of this is done at a high level of scalability and security. We will now try to place our new systems on PostgreSQL platforms if their level of criticality corresponds to this class of DBMS».
Dmitriy Podnebennyi,
Head of DBMS Support Department at Renaissance Credit Bank
